Till Nowak: COMPLICATIONS

Museum HR Giger
Rue du Château 2, Château St-Germain
CH - 1663 Gruyères/Schweiz

Verlängert bis zum 28. April 2024

(English version)

To mark the 25th anniversary of the museum in the Chateau Saint Germain in Gruyères, Switzerland, an exhibition of works by Till Nowak is being held in the museum and gallery rooms.

In terms of content, Till Nowak deals with states of manipulation, with imaginable forms of possibility that only just slip past reality. The question of how reality is formed - even in exceptional circumstances - is a leitmotif in his work.

Till Nowak met Hansruedi and Carmen Giger in 2007 after his work "Salad" had caught the attention of Giger's longtime US agent Leslie Barany. Even as a teenager, Nowak was fascinated and influenced by Giger's film and book publications, which ultimately led him to the reinterpretation of Giger's "Alien", which is a vegetable creature looking at a piece of meat.  "Salad" achieved viral fame on the World Wide Web and is a cross between the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593) and those of HR Giger .

Yvonne v. Schweinitz: Syrien – Fragmente einer Reise, Fragmente einer Zeit

Kunsthaus Nexus (Kunsthalle), Saalfelden/Österreich | Austria
Eröffnung | Opening: 08. März 2024, 20:00h

Laufzeit | duration: 09. März bis 31. Mai 2024

(English version)

The media coverage of Syria kept us in suspense for a good decade, we learned about the war in the country, saw and experienced the many refugees, heard the names of hostile groups and of destroyed cities, places and cultural monuments. Even though the reporting has slowed down, the country has still not come to rest. The country and its people have remained alien to many of us in Europe. We hardly know its history, which goes back thousands of years, although it is one of the foundations of our own history: for example, through biblical and religious events, through the rule of Rome and through the development and influence of urban culture.

Photographer Yvonne v. Schweinitz traveled to Syria in 1953 and 1960 to the now largely destroyed cities of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo, with detours to the desert oasis of Palmyra and the Alawite Mountains. Their journey continued to the crusader castle "Krak des Chevaliers" and to the northern border with Turkey, to the Simeon Monastery, Qal'at Sim'an.

On display are 80 b/w photographs and numerous large formats as well as 120 color slides taken by Yvonne v. Schweinitz with her Rolleiflex and various 35mm cameras. Supplementary material also provides an insight into the current situation in Syria, which has been shaken by the civil war.

Syria - the unknown country
The exhibition aims to focus on the people, the places and the important culture.

The exhibition highlights Syria's cultural wealth and historical significance and aims to encourage people not to give up on the country and its people.
